Burgers are no longer a quick and sloppy fix from a fast-food chain, and their rising popularity has sparked the opening of new burger joints in Edinburgh on almost a weekly basis.

With this influx of new burger joints, it’s hard to know where to go to get the best. To help you out, we’ve reviewed our favourite places where you’ll find burgers so delicious, even eating with your hands can be excused.

BURGER

94a Fountainbridge, Edinburgh, EH3 9QA

This burger joint is modelled on the new American burger chain, Shake Shack. Its sleek and shiny appearance with bright blue booths will give you the feeling of being in a buzzing American diner.

They have an impressive selection of burgers along with all the trimmings including the tempting Kimchi dog which is piled high with umami, kimchi, spring onion rings and sesame seeds. Their chilli cheese fries are decadent with skinny, crispy fries covered with kidney-bean mince and smothered with a blanket of melted cheese.

They even serve soya-milk milkshakes! For people who don’t enjoy dairy this is a surprisingly wonderful thing.

The Cambridge Bar

20 Young Street, Edinburgh, EH2 4JB

The Cambridge Bar is laid out like your traditional country pub with its lived-in feel of comforting leather sofas and a cosy fireplace.

The menu offers buffalo, chicken, beef, and veggie burgers with a variety of toppings. Our favourites are the Aussie burger (bacon, pineapple, cheddar, beetroot, and an egg) and the Five Alarm (Monterey Jack cheese, jalapenos, chipotle mayo and a spicy salsa). Combine that with sides of crispy onion rings along with spicy, crunchy Cajun fries and there’s no way your mouth wouldn’t be watering.

Their products are all seasonal, including the beers, so keep your eyes peeled for any new varieties – their Lamb and Tzatziki burger in the summer shouldn’t be missed.

The Holyrood 9a

91 Holyrood Road, Edinburgh, EH8 8AE

Holyrood 9a has a really welcoming pub feel with dark wood panelling, period ceilings and wood-burning stoves.

The burgers come in the form of lamb, pork and chorizo, beef, and four vegetarian options. They’re served in a toasted sourdough bun, with crispy French fries and home-made coleslaw.

However their burgers are only half of the appeal. They have a vast selection of craft beers, and if you’re stuck for choice, you can have a 1/3 pint taster of any unfamiliar brew before purchasing a full pint. If real ales aren’t your thing, they also stock over 20 bottled ciders and beers to whet your appetite.

It’s the perfect venue for when you’re on a date in central Edinburgh and want a craft-brewed pint and a really tasty burger.
